Every turntable must be grounded, otherwise electrical hum can occur. If a turntable isn’t grounded, it may have a different reference potential than the connected amplifier. As a result, a compensating current can flow, which can be perceived as hum.
Therefore, all high-quality turntables have a ground connection that can be connected to standard amplifiers and phono preamps. This allows the different reference potentials to be equalized and eliminates the electrical hum. However, many modern amplifiers, especially those often found in soundbars and streaming speakers, are no longer grounded. Such an ungrounded system is called a “floating mass system.” If a standard turntable is connected to such a “floating mass” amplifier, audible humming noises will occur.
