The Pro-Ject Replacement Counterweight #182 is suitable for installation on turntable tonearms: the purpose of a counterweight is to apply the optimum down force for your pick-up cartridge to read the most amount of detail within the record groove.
104g replacement counterweight for the The Classic / The Classic EVO turntables (including SB version).
The correct pressure range is individual for each cartridge, and the recommended values for your cartridge can be found in the cartridge user manual. The most typical pressure values for current cartridges are between 1.3 and 2 grams. (It used to be much more). Sometimes the pressure values can be given in units of mN (millinewton). The conversion is simple: 1 g = 10 mN. The downforce is adjusted by means of a swivel counterweight installed at the end of the arm.
By rotating the counterweight, first try to reach a position where the arm remains balanced (floats) and the tip floats freely a few millimeters on the surface of the LP record. When gently deflected up or down, the shoulder returns to its original position on its own. Then hold the metal part of the counterweight in the set position so that it does not rotate again, and set the value 0 (zero) on the rotary scale with the other hand – the starting position – align the zero with the adjustment line on the tonearm tube. Subsequently, by rotating the entire counterweight with the scale, it is possible to set the desired pressure values.
